5 Reasons Why You Should Meet with a Genetic Counselor Before Having Genetic Testing Done

By Eleanor Griffith, MS, CGC · Jul 2019

There are thousands of genetic tests on the market, varying widely in the genes included, the portions analyzed, and the accuracy of results and interpretation. Here are five reasons to speak with a genetic counselor before testing — not after.

1. To understand if and how genetic testing would actually be helpful for you.

A genetic counselor will review your personal and family medical history. Sometimes there is testing they would recommend. Other times, after reviewing the history, the discussion centers on the limitations of available testing and why it may not be very helpful for your specific situation.

2. To choose a test that is both accurate and comprehensive.

A genetic counselor can help you choose the test most likely to provide the specific information you are looking for — not the most comprehensive test, and not the cheapest, but the most appropriate one for your history and goals.

3. To choose the most cost-effective option.

Most insurers cover at least some types of genetic testing for patients who meet certain criteria. Genetic counselors are familiar with insurance billing policies of reputable testing labs and can write Letters of Medical Necessity when required. They're also familiar with high-quality, low-cost self-pay options.

4. To coordinate the testing process.

In many states, genetic counselors can order testing independently. In all states, they can order under a physician's name. A genetic counselor handles the paperwork, tracks the test at the lab, and reviews results with you once they're ready.

5. To understand what your results mean for you and your family.

Genetic testing results are only helpful if you understand what they mean — and what they don't. Unlike most healthcare providers, a genetic counselor will also write all of this down: a consult note summarizing the discussion, and a pedigree representing your family history.
