Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening
on your timeline.
Ready to move forward with NIPS? We make it possible to access testing when you're ready — with a genetic counselor in your corner from order to results.
About NIPS
Over a decade ago, Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) changed the landscape of prenatal care, making more accurate screening results available earlier in pregnancy. Major professional societies (including ACOG, SMFM, and NSGC) recommend that Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (also known as Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing, or NIPT) be offered to all pregnant patients, ideally early in pregnancy.
Grey Genetics offers a direct path to NIPS ordering — without waiting for an OB appointment. A genetic counselor coordinates your order, supports you through the process, and goes over your results with you.
Is streamlined NIPS the right path for you?
This is a good fit if you:
- Have read about NIPS/NIPT and are ready to move forward
- Want to access testing as soon as possible, without waiting for an OB appointment
- Are comfortable reviewing educational materials independently before your results appointment
A prenatal genetics consult may be a better starting point if any of the following apply:
- You have personal or family history concerns you'd like to discuss as soon as possible
- You want to first talk through all available screening and diagnostic options with a genetic counselor
- You're not sure whether NIPS is the right test for your situation
How it works
* In most states, genetic testing must be ordered by a physician. Where this applies, a separate $25 test authorization fee is required, covering review of your order by a physician partner. In some states, genetic counselors may order testing independently (FL, GA, IN, IL, IA, KY, MD, MN, MS, MT, NH, ND, NV, RI, SD, SC, WI, VA, WV). If your insurance requires an MD ordering provider for coverage purposes, however, the $25 fee will still apply.
Medicare and Medicaid: Our physician partner can serve as the ordering provider for commercial insurance or self-pay, but not when Medicare or Medicaid will be billed for the test. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, this service is available on a self-pay basis only.
Note for SD residents: SD law requires a physician referral to see a genetic counselor. If you are in SD and do not have a referral, this service is not available to you.

Scheduling includes review of educational materials and a consent form.
Prefer to meet with a genetic counselor first?
A family planning genetics consult includes review of your personal and family health history, with a focus on known or possible genetic diagnoses in the family, birth defects, and history of pregnancy loss. We review the different options for screening and diagnostic testing available before and during a pregnancy, and any genetic testing you may have already done. Your genetic counselor can also facilitate testing, if desired.
