A note on guidelines in neurogenetics: Clinical guidelines for genetic testing in neurological conditions are less developed than in some other areas of genetics, such as hereditary cancer. For many neurological conditions, research into the genetic causes is still at an earlier and actively evolving stage. Formal, evidence-based guidelines from major professional bodies (such as ACMG and NSGC) exist for a small number of conditions — most notably Huntington's disease and Alzheimer's disease. For others, guidance continues to evolve as gene discovery and clinical research advance. Participating in research studies can also contribute meaningfully to the field. See the Research Opportunities page for studies currently enrolling.

Research Studies — Neurogenetics

A global research initiative offering free genetic testing and counseling to people with a Parkinson's disease diagnosis. Participants receive results for clinically relevant PD-related genes and contribute data to advance research. Available online or in person; enrollment ongoing.

A Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating NEU-411, an investigational treatment targeting overactive LRRK2 enzyme activity in people with early Parkinson’s disease. Eligibility requires a PD diagnosis and no current use of most PD medications (including levodopa and dopamine agonists) — making timing critical: people newly diagnosed who have not yet started most treatment may be eligible before medication is initiated.

A national NIH cohort study gathering genetic and health data from one million or more people. Open to anyone in the United States; contributes to research across many conditions, including neurological disorders.
